Sexually transmitted infections are nothingto be shameful of. They’re pretty common, actually.

I remember being so terrified of STIs as a teenager. They really scare the shit out of you for no reason in health class. Feel free to copy this word for word! We don’t have a lot of social templates for this, so I decided to make a guide.

“ Before I become more physically close with someone I like to ask them about their history. I know it’s kind of an awkward conversation, but I think it’s important! Have you been tested? And I can also share my history as well.

What to say when you have an STI:

“Before we take this further, I wanted to talk about sexual health and safety! I have HPV, have you heard of it? It’s a super common STI, around 80% of sexually active people have it, but I like to be transparent with my partners out of respect for the both of us. Do you have any questions?

Bottom line: STIs are a normal part of being a sexually active adult. The important thing is communicating your status with your partners, as well as getting tested.

And note! HPV and Herpes can still spread even with the use of a condom. That’s not to say, don’t use them, but that is to say: sex does have a level of inherent risk. I think it’s important that we normalize being as safe as possible, but understanding the realities of it. We can do everything we can to protect ourselves and we might still end up getting an STI. I want you to know that that’s OK and very normal!
